Writing is an essential mode of communication in all schools. It is absolutely vital that you are able to put your ideas across in the written form most appropriate for the specific purpose and audience. Having definitive writing skills will help you to grow and develop in all spheres of your work and personal life.

This course is specifically designed for teachers who wish to sharpen their English language writing skills and techniques. It is based on the premise that clear thinking is the foundation for effective writing. The course presents a professional writing process that will enable participants to write well-structured documents that communicate clearly and concisely.

The course targets teachers. The theme of this course will be Confident Teachers = Competent Teachers. The course topics are as follows:




Date: 12 April 2014Unit 1: Focus your Writing 
  • Relate theories of communication to the writing you need to do as a teacher.
  • Do an audit of who you need to write to and why.
  • Identify your personal strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing in English.

Classroom communication: Inspiring learners to write for different purposes.

Date: 10 May 2014Unit 2:  Use the Writing Process 
  • Go through a process to produce written work that is professional and effective.

Classroom communication: Using the writing process with your learners.

Date: 17 May 2014Unit 3: Write Effectively 
  • Develop techniques that range from selecting the perfect words; using these to build clear sentences and paragraphs to express precisely what you wish to communicate.
  • You will learn how to structure your documents and use headings effectively.

Classroom communication: Increasing your learner’s word power.

Date: 24 May 2014Unit 4:  Clear Correspondence 
  • Explore the acceptable formats and styles for a range of correspondence used in the school environment: reports, agendas and minutes of meetings, internal memos, letters, faxes and emails.

Date: 31 May 2014Unit 5: Edit and Proofread to Perfection 
  • Develop skills to edit and proofread to produce high-quality documents that enhance the credibility of the writer.

  • Use creative writing to enhance your personal and professional growth and as a way to better organise and manage your life.
